Why "Papi's Coffee"?
As the president and founder of Kafes
Guatemala, one of the main reasons to
have a Guatemalan-American company
is to share and learn from both cultures.
I have seen enough of people getting
killed because of cultural differences
that I want to somehow do something different and share about my
culture.
"Papi's Coffee" came out to honor my dear dad Ernesto Castañeda
Bailey (May 1930 - Aug 2007). My dear Papi taught me many
honorable things. He taught me to be the
man I am today. He was a man that loved
coffee. At 5 am in the morning he would get
up, making the first pot of coffee for the day;
it was our tradition. If you stay in my
parents' house you will always have coffee.
He was a man who always had high hopes
and he never ever gave up. He came from a
really poor family (and I mean POOR). He
decided his family wasn't going to suffer what
he went through, and he did an amazing job.
I learned from him as well what it is to love a woman. He died in my mom's arms and
he simply said goodbye to my mom with a smile, holding my mom's hand. They were
together for 50 years. One of the many things I will never forget is how every morning,
he would go to the garden and get my mom a rose, EVERY single day since I can
remember.
The day I got the new labels for this
project, August 1st, Papi died; he never
got to see HIS LABEL. I remember he
always said, "Make me proud, make
sure the world gets to taste and enjoy
the best coffee ever."
In Latin America we call our dad and
mom Papi and Mami, a tender and
honorable way to call our parents, and
so that is why I wanted to share with
you, "Why "Papi's Coffee"?
Remember to always honor your parents, no matter how far they
are from you. Remember if you don't forget them, they will always
be close to your heart. It is never too late to call them and say,
"Hey Papi & Mami, how are you?"
Sincerely,
Pablo G. Castañeda R.
